Want to make sure your child is listening and can’t say “I didn’t hear you”?

  • Make eye contact when speaking to them

  • Don’t yell from another part of the house

  • And, have them repeat back to you what you just told them.

  • Give them a timeframe. For example, “this should be done by bedtime tonight” or “you have 30 minutes to pick up your room”. Kids are natural procrastinators. If that is not concrete enough, set a timer.

  • Explain to them that they now have two choices. They can do what you have asked, or they can disregard it and face the consequences of their choice. Be firm and consistent if they choose the latter.
